>Shares of Intel hit the skids Wednesday after it reported growing losses on its semiconductor foundry business. Politicians of both parties tout the U.S. chip maker as a national champion, but these days it looks more like an emblem of dubious government industrial policy
>Investors are getting their first close look at Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger’s ambitions to compete with TSMC and Samsung in chip manufacturing. They apparently didn’t like what they see. The Silicon Valley giant disclosed in a securities filing that it lost $7 billion on its foundry unit last year on $18.9 billion in sale
>Gelsinger was among the loudest advocates for Washington’s $280 billion chips bill in 2022 to boost domestic chip manufacturing
>Last month the Administration announced $8.5 billion in direct funding for Intel, plus up to $11 billion in low-cost loans for projects
>Intel says it also plans to pocket federal tax credits from the chips bill that could offset up to 25% of its estimated $100 billion U.S. expansion
>Intel could pocket some $50 billion in federal subsidies. Yet Gelsinger wants more. American chip manufacturing “doesn’t get fixed in one three- to five-year program,” the CEO said last month. “I do think we’ll need at least a CHIPS 2 to finish that job.”

Due to lack of vertical integration, having to source everything from all over the globe, unionized jobs, high salaries, lack of educated workers, and high CEO yearly bonuses, Intel is losing $30B/year. Yet, they are taking $50B/year in government subsidies, to prop up a gargantuan money losing company, just so that the US can have a semiconductor producer on the global stage.

Intel will likely receive $500B over 10 years in subsidies, likely more, since Intel's CEO said $50B/year just isn't enough. How long can the US continue propping up Intel? Or are they too important to lose, much like Boeing/GM/American banks? In that they have to be constantly bailed out, because they cannot fail?

Have you never been in a relationship? Women are a money sink. Constant demands, constant plans, constant gifts. Then you get married. And you have kids. You now have to provide more. Buy things you wouldn't want normally, like larger cars, or a house. Plus, the cost of raising children.

And that's not even factoring in divorce which will guaranteed take at least half of your overall wealth. A robot Waifu could be priced in the millions, and it'd still be cheaper than marriage. Sure, the robot will only pretend to love you, but let's not fool ourselves into thinking the real woman is any different. At least the robot will maintain the charade forever.

It's not that far away, but worthless NEETs will never be able to afford them.
You'll be expected to die ignominious deaths from gross flatulence, autism, or at the hands of a female you've offended by existing, just as you have for millennia - your desires matter that little in the real world.

AI waifus are going to be a huge deal within the next 10 years
theres already a huge population of men who are so desperate for female interaction that they develop parasocial bonds with streamers, vtubers, OF models, etc
neurosama (first AI vtuber) has been a huge success despite being a fairly rudimentary
Ive found neuro to be genuinely funny and clever and she kind of opened my eyes to the potential of AI entertainment
if you mean actual robots and not just voice only AI gfs, then that probably wont happen within the decade

Basically net neutrality means your ISP can't prioritize traffic based on who its going to
Say your ISP is Comcast, they own NBCUniversal and want to promote their streaming service Peacock, so they limit your connection to Netflix to 1 mbps
This is not allowed under net neutrality

I bought it, found the air pressure it gave in my ears to be really uncomfortable, and then returned it. It was my first IEM purchase. I might go for the final e2000 next (vented and apparently good eartips), but I heard that Final has QC issues.

What timeline are you from? Vista didn't even release to the general public untill 2007, before that was XP, which almost no one was running the 64-bit version.

Hey /g/! trying something new, If this gets traction I’d like to try and do one of these on the first of every month.

Previous thread: NA

These generals will focus on PDAs and like gadgets from the late 80s up through the turn of the century. Eventually evolving into what we carry now as smartphones.

I love this area of computing and technology a lot, and I think looking back and discussing what did, could’ve, and should’ve happened will be prompts for good discussion. I hope you guys find it fun too!

I’d also like to do a monthly question/prompt.

This month’s prompt is:
What separates a PDA, from a portable computer, and a digital organizer.
Ie, what’s going to be our exact definition going forward of “PDA”?

Do early pocket computers count? Do electronic Rolodexes count?

Zoomers are too young to remember these things and are idealizing them because nostalgia is fun. The truth is that they weren't very capable or interesting.

Your PDA was nothing like a computer or a smartphone. There was no 4G/5G internet to use with it. Public wifi did not exist. It had a calendar, a list, a clock and an address/phone book.

They died out because they replaced little paper books people used to carry for the same purpose, but one PDA cost more than half a millennium of the little books and was more cumbersome to use.

The tech just wasn't there for the devices to be useful or get wide adoption.
>>
>>100261274
I had a visor in middle school acktually

On their price: yes of course they were expensive, early adopter tech always is. And honestly, let’s not pretend flagship smartphones don’t also cost an arm and a leg. I remember lusting over an iPaq for close to $600, in the same way that I lust over $1000+ phones today

Secondly, while a lot of people only used them as glorified calendars, and I’m certain those people felt ripped off, that’s not what I like about these

I like PDAs that specifically aren’t just digital organizers. When you realize they’re full computers, and platforms with software for things beyond note taking, they become neat

I grafittid out emails and messages on that visor, and sent them to friends across the state over infrared with my Nokia 6210. I played various text adventures on an HP95 LX while camping in the woods

I remember when gameboy emulators started popping up for the palm platform, and when doom and quake got pocket PC versions that I wanted so dearly.

I wrote my first terminal emulator on that 95LX, and so so so many shitty games and utilities.

Without people like Jeff Hawkins, I don’t think we would have gotten the smartphone when we did.
Inevitably we would have gotten there for sure, but who knows- maybe we’d be walking around with little keyboard clamshells still. iPhone might not have happened at all if Jeff didn’t meet with Steve and piss on his world centered on Macintosh ideology

Andy Rubin, one of the co-founders of android started that journey with magic cap OS. An operating system for PDAs. He then used that experience for the danger hiptop communicator, and eventually android

PSION’s epoc OS is what became Symbian- which was by far and away the most popular software for early smartphones.
RIM and blackberry started in this space, and the US government basically ran exclusively on their networks for years

This stuff is neat I like it

I guess your PDA was just more capable than mine? I understand your enthusiasm for very mobile computers though. For me, the start of that was graphing calculators. When I got one it was the first time I had a pocket sized machine that I could write and run computer programs on and I got a lot of mileage out of this when I was in school. You should look in the Maid Computer threads if you are interested in modern handhelds.

Let's have another HDD thread.
I purchased 4 of pic real refurbished for 90 bucks each 12tbs. Did I do good or did I go full retard? It seems like refurbished drives make sense because most drives fail in the first year or many many years down the line. They have 5 year warranty from the refurbisher.
Is Seagate really dogshit? I have had an 8tb barracuda for 4 years now with no issues, but everyone on /g/ seems to hate Seagate. I think it's SMR though, which everyone says is horrible technology.
